It’s completely normal that some of us are feeling anxious, inadequate, depressed as we are in unprecedented times that our generation have never experienced. Almost everyone’s jobs, businesses or investments have been affected somehow we have lost control of our lives and have been restricted from doing the things we normally do. I think if you are feeling inadequate it’s useful to know that you might be experiencing some sort of grief, best to realise what stage of the grief cycle you are in DR Kubler Ross stages of grief model;
- Denial
- Anger
- Bargaining
- Depression
The first tip I would advise if you are feeling inadequate is learning to be kind to yourself, compassion for yourself and others is key to being resilient – silence the critic who pushes you inside of your head.

If you are a type A personality who expects perfection, it’s important to drop the image of perfection right now and to know your best is good enough in these unusual times.
We need to work out what is it exactly that is making us feel inadequate right now, incorporate some form of stillness in your day. I like to sit in silence with a pen and write down what I am feeling. We need to separate what we can control from what we can’t control. What we can control we can act on which will make us feel empowered … but what we can’t control we have to let go of!
If it is the constant negative news or negative people around you, you need to “stand guard at the door of your mind” as Jim Rohn famously said. Something that helped finding yourself feeling lazy, tired, moody or anxious this is a reminder get up and do some exercise, this helped me tremendously when I was stuck in a hospital and throughout my 4 year journey with my leg .
After my eight operations I would spend sometimes more than 20 hours a day laying in a bed and I would catch myself feeling depressed or shitty, the best thing I could do even in my darkest and toughest of times is to incorporate some form of exercise into my daily routine .
If you catch yourself falling into a depression or bad mood exercise no matter how small is proven to give you an instant boost of endorphins, serotonin and dopamine all which help you balance your bodies levels of stress and happiness! Reframing the situation to try and find the positives. Reframing the negatives around you to the positives , so look for the positives in every situation, for example if you are self isolating reframe it to a self growth period.
Seeing this as a period to build on your resilience bank so the next time something happens you are better prepared find things that you enjoy doing no matter how small and do those things. For me whenever I feel inadequate I volunteer with other Hark Angel volunteers and we pack food packs and deliver them to the elderly and vulnerable gives me a feeling of purpose.
Tips / advice for those who want to launch an idea or business but feel it’s not the right time.
These are some people out there who are making money right now and will emerge more successful than others from these times.
They argue that in Chinese the word crisis means both danger and opportunity. We need to find the opportunities that are out there.
We need to ask ourselves whether our idea or business is needed right now, or whether we are positioned to take advantage of what the new world will look like Post Covid 19?
- Industries that are doing well right now
- Local grocers
- Health and medical supplies
- Liquor stores
- DIY and home improvement products
- Home gym equipment
What about post Covid 19?
- Due to high unemployment, education always does well
- Mental health will be a big one
- There will be no international travel so domestic holiday destinations and accommodation
- AI and Technology may speed up as companies are already relying less on staff and more on tech to cut costs
Some of the best businesses were born out of recessions, think back to the GFC some of the businesses that came out of that are Instagram, whats app, air b and b and so on and as the legendary warren Buffet says “be cautious when others are greedy, and be greedy when others are cautious“
Think about what your community needs right now. Right now is not a good time to be spending a lot of money. You have to be smart in the way that you test the market.
- Be creative.
- Be very smart about how you want to test the waters.
- Start up a Podcast / Blog in the industry you want to get involved in.
- Collaborate with the leaders you want to be aligned with.
- Start the journey – towards being a key opinion leader in your space.
